Rainy Day Rocks

I helped collect A LOT of rocks for the awesome rock runner my sister made a few weeks ago at the beach.

We had a lot of rocks that didn’t make the cut. Not flat enough.  Not gray enough.  Not big enough.

I was left with a whole pile of perfectly flat, perfectly gray, but imperfectly thin and small rocks.

The kids and I sorted and counted and eventually started painting them.

For my just-starting to read five year old, I spelled out the first line of the Langston Hughes poem he recited in his class play, one letter to a rock.

It proved to be a great rainy day activity.  First, he unscrambled the letters to spell out his line.

We then tried to form other words with the letters.

And then back again.

I made Noah a set with the letters of his name.  He loves lining up his letters and reading them aloud.

I made a set for my niece, who is reading beautifully. I imagine it won’t be long before she can find all 75+ words I found using the letters in her name (go ahead, try it… I couldn’t stop).
