Fruit Ninja – Live
My sons have limited screen and video game time, especially this time of year. It feels crazy to write that, as they are sitting beside me this morning watching Willa Wild Life on TV while I type.
Still, there is no Wii or Playstation in the house. I’ve learned enough to never say never, but for now, the Leappad, Dad’s iPad and my iPhone apps provide a small window of video game playing.
Fruit Ninja is a favorite on my iPhone – you control the ninja knife that slices and dices fruit in the air.
Dodai Stewart over at Jezebel wrote a clever article about The 10 Real Life “Zen” Lessons of Fruit Ninja, included my favorites:
- THE FRENZY BANANA SHOWS US CHAOS IS BEST WHEN IT IS SHORT-LIVED.
- WHEN YOU CAN FREEZE THE FRENZY, YOU WILL FIND SUCCESS.
- WHEN YOU’RE STRUGGLING WITH SOMETHING, LOOK AT IT FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE.
- FRUIT IS GOOD FOR YOU.
I had to play a few times. You know, in the name of research and parental supervision.
I’m not addicted (again, never say never) but perhaps obsessed, for when I saw this most lovely tutorial for party decor

I only had one thought:
FRUIT NINJA LIVE.
Ryan and I talked about it for awhile and finally executed it on a very hot day.
There weren’t a lot of rules. We filled a lot of balloons in different colors. Each “fruit” was assigned a point value. I thought the leaves were so cute but Ryan didn’t have much patience for them.
As Ryan envisioned, we tried taking turns tossing the balloons in the air, for the other to try to pierce in the air. Our plastic sword did not have the desired impact on airborne balloons, so we hung the balloons from white plastic chain-link (leftover from my sister’s trendy necklace project) strung between two columns (a lovely entrance, right? See why paint color is feeling very important??). This part of the set-up took the most patience.
Once we hung a few balloons, each Ninja had sixty seconds to knock down as many “fruits” as possible. This part was fast and fun!
