With summer here and hot, sweaty kids needing hydration, I was thrilled to find an H20 alternative not as sweetened as juice but as attractive to my kids as a juice box.
My kids mobbed the free cooler at Teavana on a recent sneaker-shopping trip to the mall. I learned a little about this caffeine-free, low sugar tea and brought some home. We tried the Blueberry Bliss & Strawberry Lemonade Blend, a Rooiboos tea boasting plenty of vitamins and antioxidants and potential health benefits as it is a natural anti-histamine (good for colds, allergies and stomach ailments). We also indulged in the German Rock Sugar, which we never ever sample without first dissolving it for the tea. We don’t treat it like rock candy and crunch it in our teeth. Not ever.
We followed the simple brewing instructions and finished our canister of 50 servings in a few weeks (plenty of rock sugar still left). Teavana had lots of lovely brewing tools but we found a metal strainer and big pot of water worked just fine. Now its time to bring the bin back for a refill or start drying our own tea leaves.
It passed the test even with some very discerning playdate guests.
Now I just have to try it on my dad, the Diet Snapple King.
Rooibos is from South Africa. My sister Kim is on safari there now.
