Summer Stock…by Melanie
My sister Melanie does more than her fair share of our family’s birthday and holiday shopping (it helps that she now gets a discount at Lululemon) and manages a single Kindle account for my mom, grandmother and me (which is why my Grandma Pearl read 50 Shades of Gray and called this weekend to see if she should keep reading Gone Girl). When Melanie picked out birthday gifts for our mom to give to my nine year old nephew, the gifts (Uno Roboto game and Alvin & The Chipmunks DVDs) not only elicited shrieks from the birthday boy but his mom even managed to act surprised, convincingly uttering “I have never seen that game before” and “How did Nana know you just watched and loved that movie?”
She is plainly a good shopper who gets things right.
When our family got together in Rhode Island this weekend, she brought along another great purchase: dollar wooden masks on sticks from Joann’s Fabrics.

She brought a set of Do-A-Dot markers – one of my favorite first and forever art materials for kids
The kids (and adults) were very busy. That strawberry on the plate is my husband’s noble effort at substituting the missing red dot marker.
I wrote the N, but otherwise Noah wrote his name. Sort of.
And he made this cute owl.
The decorating came easy. Recruiting talent was a bit more challenging. It was at times a one-woman show.
